How much does it cost to clear a car in Nigeria?

Clearing a car costs the customs duty and levies, which you can calculate exactly, plus port, shipping-line and agent charges, which agents quote. Here is the customs part for popular used cars, worked out at today's exchange rate.
Worked at ₦1,332 to the US dollar (today's market rate) and the rates customs applies since 1 July 2026. Customs uses its own official rate, so your assessment will differ slightly.

Common questions
Why is my agent's quote higher than the duty?
Agents quote the full landed cost: customs duty and levies plus terminal, shipping-line, storage and their own fee. Ask for each part separately.
Does customs use my purchase price?
Not always. Customs can assess cars on its own valuation of the model and year, so the duty can differ from a calculation on your invoice.
Are electric cars cheaper to clear?
Yes. Under the current measures, electric vehicles are exempt from import duty, VAT and the green tax.
